Welcome to the Committee on Dental Auxiliaries

Upcoming Law Changes

Effective July 1, 2009

SB 853 was signed by the Governor on June 13, 2008. The Committee on Dental Auxiliaries (COMDA) as it has been known, will be abolished.

What this means is that Registered Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Assistants in Extended Functions will be represented by and fall under the jurisdiction of the Dental Board of California. The Board is mandated to create a forum where dental assistant services and regulatory oversight of dental assistants can be discussed.

The creation of the "Dental Hygiene Committee of California" (DHCC) will replace COMDA and will represent the Registered Dental Hygienists, Registered Dental Hygienists in Extended Functions, and Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practice.

The new Dental Hygiene Committee of California will consist of 9 members appointed by the Governor; 4 public members, 1 practicing dentist, and 4 registered dental hygienists. Of the registered dental hygienists, 1 will be an educator, and 1 will be licensed in either alternative practice or extended functions.

It is anticipated that the exchange will be seamless, with little or no disruption to applicants and licensees.
