A currently-licensed RDA may perform coronal polishing and/or ultrasonic scaling ONLY after the completion of a Board-approved program for each. These courses are referred to as "expanded functions".  They should not be confused with the separate "Extended Functions" license that can be obtained by a RDA following specified training and passage of a specific State clinical examination.

All applicants for RDA licensure must submit evidence of having completed an approved coronal polishing course, and all existing RDA licensees must do so prior to March 31, 2006 or their license will be automatically suspended.

COMDA must be notified of each person's successful passage of the required courses PRIOR to performing the duties, on a specific card that is available from COMDA.  Whether the card is sent by the program or by the student, it must be signed and sealed by officials of the program, certifying that certain requirements have been met.  Once certified, these duties can be performed under the direct supervision of the supervising dentist.
